“Is ‘hell-fire’ preaching effective?”
Preaching the reality of hell, without using the Law to bring the knowledge of sin, can do a great deal of damage to the cause of the gospel. A sinner cannot conceive of the thought that God would send anyone to hell, as long as he is deceived into thinking that God’s standard of righteousness is the same as his. Paul “reasoned” with Felix regarding righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come (Acts 24:25). This is the righteousness that is of the Law and judgment by the Law. Felix “trembled” because he suddenly understood that his intemperance made him a guilty sinner in the sight of a holy God. The reality of hell suddenly became reasonable to him when the Law was used to bring the knowledge of sin.
Imagine if the police burst into your home, arrested you, and shouted, “You are going away for a long time!” Such conduct would probably leave you bewildered and angry. What they have done seems unreasonable.
However, imagine if the law burst into your home and instead told you specifically why you were in trouble: “We have discovered 10,000 marijuana plants growing in your back yard. You are going away for a long time!” At least then you would understand why you are in trouble. Knowledge of the law you have transgressed furnished you with that understanding. It makes judgment reasonable. Hell-fire preaching without use of the Law to show the sinner why God is angry with him will more than likely leave him bewildered and angry—for what he considers unreasonable punishment.
By Ray Comfort Taken from the Evidence Bible...
Ray Comfort says something that is very important about Hell-Fire Preaching, "Now saints, i'm not talking about hell-fire preaching. Hell fire-preaching will produce fear-filled converts. Using God's law will produce tear-filled converts. This one comes because why? He wants to escape the fires of hell. But in his heart, he thinks God is harsh and unjust, because the law hasn't been used to show him the exceeding sinful nature of sin. He doesn't see hell as being his just dessert, that he deserves hell. Therefore, he doesn't understand mercy or grace; and therefore, he lacks gratitude to God for his mercy. And gratitude is the prime motivation for evangelism. There'll be no zeal in the heart of false convert to evangelize.
But this one comes knowing he has sinned against heaven. That God's eye is in every place beholing the evil and the good, and God has seen darkness as though it were pure light. He seen his thought life. If God in His holiness on the day of wrath made manifest all the secret sins of his heart, all the deeds done in darkness, if he made manifest all the evidence of his guilt, God could pick up as an unclean thing and cast him into hell and do that which is just. But instead of giving him justice, he's given him mercy. Romans 5:8, He's commended his love toward him in that while he's yet a sinner Christ died for him. He falls on his knees before that blood-stained cross, and he says, 'Oh, God, if You do that for me, I'll do anything for You. I delight to do your will, oh, my God. Your law is written upon my heart.'
And like the man who knew he had to pass through door and face the consequences of breaking the law of gravity and would never take his parachute off because his very life depended on it, so he who comes to the Savior, knowing he has to face a holy God on the day of wrath, would never forsake the righteousness of God in Christ because His very life depends on it."
I hear people tell me that Hell fire-preaching is, 'effective' but is that true, no way can that be true you didn't get that from the old time preachers no sir not true, they used the Law of God the Ten Commandments.
Now I have grown very angry with Hell fire-preaching because it makes no sense to the unbelievers it doesn't show them sin or the Law of God I think the message is unreasonable. I think these flame-throwers need to learn Biblical Evangelism. Which they have no clue about cause if they knew the Biblical way to witness to someone they wouldn't be hell fire-preachers, they wouldn't Shout "TURN OR BURN?" No that's not the Gospel that message makes me sick and I can't stand it. It makes no sense whatsoever to preach 'Turn or Burn.' You hell fire-preachers need to learn to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. I know I will probably get crap for this one but I don't care Hell Fire-Preaching is not 'Effective' it does more damage than good I pray that you learn from this and stop preaching "TURN OR BURN CRAP IT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL. WE SHOULD USE THE LAW OF GOD?"
