USING THE LAW IN EVANGELISM

This man came running and fell
to his knees before Jesus. His
earnest and humble heart would
seem to make him a prime candidate as a
potential convert. Yet, instead of giving him
the message of God’s grace, Jesus used the
Law to expose the man’s hidden sin. This
man was a transgressor of the First of the
Ten Commandments. His money was his god,
and one cannot serve God and mammon.
Verse 21 reveals that it was love that motivated
the Savior to speak in this way to this
rich young man. Love will be concerned with
the desire for a genuine conversion, rather
than a sense of accomplishment in leading
someone in a sinner’s prayer whose heart
isn’t right with God. (See also Matthew 19:17–22.)
